Frequently asked questions
General
We think there are a lot of reasons, but to keep it short:
1. We're passionate about fruit trees! We may sell a couple other things, but our main interest and experience is with planting, managing, pruning and enjoying fruit trees. We believe everyone should have a fruit tree or two, it truly brings joy to people young and old to pick a piece of fruit off a tree in there yard and enjoy it.
2. We do everything we can to keep prices low; between keeping prices down to $50 on the 3-year-old trees to looking for other options and offering the $25 line of 2-year-old trees, we're always looking for ways to keep fruit trees accessible to people!
3. We'll work ahead of the season and order you what you want if you reach out to us!
Because we think they are better!
Bareroot trees are trees that are dug while they are still dormant from winter, and stored without any soil around their roots. This helps mainly by making them easier to ship, handle and store - no heavy containers of dirt and they are able to acclimate to their new soil/home quicker once planted. This also plays into why we're able to sell these trees for cheaper!
But you do have less time to get them planted. Once they leave the nursery, bare root trees need to get in the ground within a week at the longest. With no soil, the roots can dry out and die if left exposed for any time. So we keep them hydrated in straw or wood shavings, and out of the sun in a cool spot until they are sold or planted.
As of the 2026 bareroot tree season, we will not be shipping any plants. Trees are pickup only in River Falls by appointment. We are however continuing to do a couple pickup times in Woodbury, MN to cut the distance a bit for our farther away MN customers.
If we're close enough to you for you to drive to River Falls to pick up (we also offer a Woodbury MN pick up spot), we think that's key. We get a few minutes of face to face time to talk about getting them in the ground, and you get a tree that has not been topped (cut off to fit in a shipping box). Plus, it keeps costs down for you.
I ordered from a big box store a couple years ago, and a well known online nursery last year, and both times, I was charged $30+ for shipping, and both times, the trees were cut off at or below 4 feet. Just to fit in a box, just to keep their prices down, but still charge enough to buy another whole tree! Below is a picture of a typical 9/16" tree we offer. We don't "top" our trees, because we don't have to jam them into a shipping box. Yes, you can ship this tree in an oversized freight box, but that will cost more than the tree!
Due to the nature of our order-ahead bareroot nursery, please read more for your refund situation:
Orders canceled before March, can often be refunded 100%.
Order canceled in March will be refunded as the purchase price of tree(s) minus a down payment price ($10 per tree).
Orders cannot be cancelled once April 1st arrives. At this point we have paid for your trees, scheduled shipping and paid for handling.
Small fruit orders (blueberries, for example) that are cancelled can be refunded 100%.
Payments are non-refundable on cancelled or on orders that are not picked up by May 1st.
We guarantee that we will sell you a living, thriving tree. Once they leave us, we have no control over what happens to them. We cannot control the weather, or the amount of animal protection you provide them, etc.
If you do not see signs of life (no buds, no leaves, brittle branches, and a light scrape of the bark doesn't show green underneath) please contact us and send us a picture of the tree before July 4th to set up a replacement tree. In most cases, we will be able to replace the tree the following year for free if notified on time and that it wasn't due to animals, pests or improper planting/care.
If notified after July 4th through the fall of that current growing season, we will do a one-time replacement tree for half of the listed price, provided it was not due to animal, pests or improper planting/care. Again, please send us a picture.
